MCCAIN SWERVES RIGHT....THE MODERATES LOVED IT....BUT DID ANYONE NOTICE?
Last night, on an edition of Fox News' YOU DECIDE 2008 with BILL HEMMER, they featured one of those Frank Luntz Focus Groups. Now to get into one of these focus groups, you have to basically convince the vetting group that your are uninformed, undecided, that you recently secured a sub prime mortgage and pay day advance loan at the same time and you developed carpel tunnel syndrome by texting in thousands of votes for American Idol. But you did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
And if that wasn't enough, the special guest was Jerry Springer. Boy, history was "in the air."
And actually, history did happen. Not that anyone in attendance noticed. And certainly it will go un noticed by the McCain Campaign. And the history was this: McCain veered far right...as in going very conservative...in a speech. Now, stunning as that is by itself, it gets better. As he veered right, the "moderates" in the group...those registered as "independents" gave the speech rave reviews. Now, assuming that they weren't turning those dials looking to change the channel to "The View," this proves what we've been saying for so so long. Conservatism works...everytime it's tried. Read below the quote that started those dials pointing way way way up for McCain among Republicans and independents:
McCain said that he looks forward to a debate with those who have "A PICTURE OF THE WORLD IN WHICH AMERICA'S MISTAKES ARE A GREATER THREAT TO OUR SECURITY THAN MALEVOLENT INTENTIONS OF AN ENEMY THAT DESPISES US AND OUR IDEALS. A WORLD THEY SAY CAN BE MADE SAFER AND MORE PEACEFUL BY PLACATING OUR IMPLACABLE FOES…AND BREAKING FAITH WITH ALLIES AND THE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD WITH WHOM AMERICA AND OUR IDEALS HAS LONG BEEN THE LAST BEST HOPE OF EARTH."
Now, neither Frank Luntz nor Bill Hemmer...let alone Jerry Springer....figured this out. We know that Luntz was clueless, because he called it "astounding" and asked (in vain) the audience how this could possibly happen. DUUUHHH.
What McCain had swerved into there was a slam of the liberal "blame America first" folks and a reminder that it is our country that alone is the world's best hope for peace in spite of what B. Hussein Obama and Hillary Clinton believe. He had gone RIGHT WING. Hard. Solidly. And the result? The moderates and independents LOVED IT. They heard conservatism articulated and they got it. They liked it. They agreed with it.
Of course, we have good reason to believe that the McCain Campaign will not figure this out either...and certainly if the campaign does figure it out, weenie advisor Mark McKinnon will go kicking and screaming back to Mama Obama and renew his Democratic registration because the waskally wepubwicans are being meanies.
Dick Morris and Chris Matthews and the rest of the punidts will remain absolutely clueless. But make no mistake about it. What was just witnessed was conservative leadership SWAYING THE OPINIONS OF MODERATES AND INDEPENDENTS. It was not pandering. It was not pretending to be moderate. It was leading with conservative principals.
Works. Everytime it's tried. Now, someone send a memo to the McCain campaign.
